Other News
My husband, Gary Lee Parks, has written his second book, Theatres of the San Francisco Peninsula, with Jack Tillmany, author of Theatres of San Francisco and Theatres of Oakland. It was released on August 22 of 2011. Arcadia Publishing lists it here. It traces the history of movie theatres from Sunnyvale to Daly City, beginning with playhouses and storefront nickelodeons, continuing through the movie palace period, the golden age of the drive-in theatre, and into the days of the multiplex. It features theatres such as the Fox in Redwood City and the Stanford and the Varsity in Palo Alto.
Gary's first book, Theatres of San Jose, was released on June 22 of 2009. Arcadia Publishing lists it here. It traces the history of movie theatres in San Jose and the surrounding cities from the nickelodeons of the silent movie era, through the golden age of movie palaces, to the domes and drive-ins of the 60s. It features the restored California Theatre, now home to Opera San Jose and the San Jose Symphony.
Gary is on the national board of directors of the Theatre Historical Society of America. He has participated in campaigns to save and restore a number of historic movie palaces, including the California Theatre in San Jose, the Golden State Theatre in Monterey, and the Varsity Theatre in Palo Alto (now Borders Books, but with much of its historic architecture intact).
